As a traditional business consultant, I learned to apply the core tenets of emotional intelligence to employee-client relations, change management and executive leadership. I soon realized that this focus on emotional intelligence could also be brought to bear on important meetings and corporate events, with deeper and more satisfying business relationships as the potential reward. Before long, I was envisaging an event management company that applied emotional intelligence to the business of corporate events and entertainment.
Thirteen years ago, when I was working with a large consulting company, I was assigned to a team that was in the process of landing a huge account. A long weekend in Pebble Beach was in the works to seal the deal: 12 guys, 36 holes, a private plane, and cost was no consideration.
As I settled into my new team, I began asking what I considered to be some crucial questions:
- What personal information do you have about your guests – and have you carefully considered that information in your planning?
- Do you know what your guests drink?
- Have you golfed with these people before?
- Do you know how they react when they play poorly or lose?
It didn’t take long to realize that our team didn’t have all the answers – and that’s when the idea of ForbesRobinson was born.
Fast forward 10 years, and I believe more than ever that the focus of planning successful corporate meetings and events must be on the people who will attend – and not, as it is for many companies, on where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing.
